A common problem Red Oak is called upon to fix on wooden New England homes is exterior rot caused by poor construction and water seepage, according to Reliable Bob of Red Oak Renovations.
"Improperly constructed entryways are a prime cause of leakage and rot, which erodes the value and integrity of your home," Bob said. "Building a covered entryway eliminates the problem by keeping the area dryer."
If you want to replace wooden shingles, vinyl or metal siding, Reliable Bob recommends Hardy Plank.
"Hardy Plank is made from cement. It looks like the cedar shakes found in New England, but doesn't act like it. You can paint it, and it won't need painting again for 15 years. It won't rot, either," Bob said. "I replaced the aluminum siding on my Sandy Pond house with Hardy Plank, and it has the traditional appearance I wanted. The best thing is, I won't have to paint it again for quite a while."
